The California notary exam tests your knowledge of penalty amounts for various violations. There are five penalty tiers, and the exam expects you to match each violation to its dollar amount. Most students find this the hardest section to memorize.
We built a one-page penalty cheat sheet that organizes every fine by amount, gives you the “trigger words” to watch for in exam questions, and explains the pattern behind the penalty structure so you can reason through questions you have not memorized.
What the cheat sheet covers
- All five penalty tiers from $500 to $10,000
- The specific violations that fall under each tier
- Trigger words that appear in exam questions (like “negligent” for $750 and “willful” for $1,500)
- The difference between misdemeanors and felonies for notary violations
- A quick reference table you can review right before the exam

How to use it
Print it out or save it to your phone. Review it a few times in the days before your exam. Focus on the pattern: fines increase with intent. Forgetting paperwork ($500) costs less than being negligent ($750), which costs less than acting willfully ($1,500). Once you internalize the pattern, individual questions get much easier.
